Homeopathy is a holistic medical treatment which has been in existence since the 19th century. It is based on the observation of its founder Samuel Hahnemann that no two similar diseases can exist in one person similtaneously - the stronger will always extinguish the weaker, like cures like. Based on this, he found substances in nature, often poisonous, which caused particular symptoms to arise when tested on healthy people. These symptoms were noted and a 'disease picture' formed of the substance. When they were given to a person suffering from similar enough symptoms, it was found to heal the disease.
Substances such as Deadly Nightshade (Belladonna), Arsenic, snake venom (Lachesis) and bee sting (Apis), have been in use by homeopaths for over 200 years and are still potent medicines to this day. We rely on what has been proven to work. Also, substances which in their natural state are thought to be inert (lacking in healing properties) have become magnificent healing agents in their homeopathic form - gold (Aurum), club moss (Lycopodium), oyster shell (Calcarea Carbonica) and so on. There are now over 4,000 medicines in the homeopathic pharmacopeia.
Also of concern to Hahnemann was the large doses of corrosive medicines which were regularly adminstered to the sick (a situation which still exists in our modern world). He found a way of attuning his poisonous medicines using dilution and succussion (shaking) so that only a minute amount of the substance was necessary medicinally to initiate a cure by 'triggering' the immune system to rouse up. He found that even minute amounts were enough to trigger a healing response, thus making homeopathy safe and gentle in its action.
Hahnemann was ahead of his time. He understood that people have an animating force which when healthy allows their different systems to function harmoniously, but which when sick throws out symptoms and signs that all is not well. These symptoms, seen as 'dangerous' and needing to be suppressed by conventional doctors, were seen merely as warnings that all was not well and indicators by Hahnemann of which medicine was needed in order to rebalance this animating force and restore health. He also understood that certain diseases, such as tuberculosis, when treated suppressively could be engrafted onto the constitution of subsequent generations and form 'miasms', or inherited weaknesses. We now have many medicines which can heal at this deep constitutional level, releasing people from these scourges.
The Remedies
Potentised homeopathic remedies are usually prescribed in tablet form. The diluted and succussed substances are stored in alcohol and one or two drops of this are added to a bottle of tablets. This is what is prescribed to patients, who are asked to let the tablet dissolve slowly under the tongue. The homeopathic remedy substance then influences the body's vitality via the nervous system. They can also be prescribed in a gentler, but deeper, liquid form, called LM potencies. These may be prescribed for very sensitive, or very poorly people.
